Palo Santo Powder (Bursera Graveolens) Peru

The wood is aromatic only when the tree has died and aged three to four years on the forest floor - the resin saturates the heartwood slowly as the tree decomposes. Living Bursera graveolens produces no usable aroma; the chemistry develops only post-mortem. Peruvian regulation permits harvest only of naturally fallen, naturally aged wood; what reaches the workshop is the second stage of the tree's life, after the first has ended on its own terms. Ground fine, the powder releases its volatile fraction (limonene, α-terpineol, menthofuran) faster than a stick - better for short, intense sessions.

1. Light a charcoal disc until edges glow grey-white (30–45 seconds).
2. Sprinkle a small pinch of powder onto the warm charcoal.
3. Citric brightness opens within seconds; the sweet woody warmth follows.
4. Add more powder as needed - the burn is intense but short.
5. Let the burner cool fully before clearing.

Burn in a ventilated room. The powder format produces more smoke per gram than sticks - start with less than feels intuitive.
